Posted November 8, 2005 We Always Knew Religion Wasn't a Good Thing A recent study (October 2005) published in the Journal of Religion and Society compares religious belief and various measurable social ills in various countries. The study found that religious belief is correlated with a number of social ills including higher abortion and teen pregnancy rates, higher homicide and suicide rates, higher child mortality, and lower life expectancy. This is a study about correlations and the author calls for additional research to determine causality. We think that additional research will provide solid evidence of causality. In the mean time, the theists have a lot of explaining to do. Michael Newdow, the US Supreme Court has allowed the phrase "under God," which Congress inserted into the Pledge of Allegiance fifty years ago, to stand for the time being. The Atheist Community of Austin co-filed an amicus brief on behalf of Michael Newdow, a fellow atheist whose challenge to the theistic reference was upheld by a lower court. Posted January 16, 2004 (Article off site) In Defense of Planned Parenthood The Board of Directors of the Atheist Community of Austin voted on December 14th to oppose the efforts of groups that try to impose the restrictions of their religious beliefs on the health care of the general population of Austin. Specifically, the Board addressed boycott threats made by a religious coalition led by the Texas Contractors and Suppliers for Life against companies involved in the construction of a Planned Parenthood facility in Austin known as The Choice Project.
