Activism - Page 2
The ACA at City Hall, in one of its
earliest bits of activism. Austin mayor Bruce Todd proclaims November 22-29,
1996 "Give Thanks for State/Church Separation Week." How about them
apples! Kudos to Rodney Florence for his work on the proclamation and the great
photos. Below left is the proclamation itself.
Irony is never far from atheist political
activities. Here, at the very same city council meeting at which the above proclamation
was read, ACA members remain seated during the traditional Christian prayer
that opens each meeting. Kellen drummed up a bit of controversy surrounding
this little ritual by phoning every weird religious cult she could think of
to encourage them to demand equal time. Things got interesting when the Hindu
priestess and the leader of the local Eckankar group demanded equal time.
